Mountain ID Privacy Policy

Kippis Studios Inc. (“Kippis Studios,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) operates the Mountain ID mobile application (“Mountain ID” or the “App”). This Privacy Policy explains how we handle information when you use the App.

Mountain ID is an augmented reality app that helps you identify nearby mountains using your device’s location, compass, and camera. We designed the App to work primarily on your device and to collect only what is needed for that experience.

1. Information we collect

Information you provide

Mountain ID does not require you to create an account. We do not ask for your name, email address, or other contact information to use the App.

Information collected automatically on your device

When you use the App, the following information is processed on your iPhone or iPad:

• Location data — With your permission, we access precise location information while the App is in use (including latitude, longitude, altitude, and location accuracy). This is used to find nearby mountains, place AR labels, and show distance and bearing information.
• Compass and heading data — With your permission, we access device heading and heading accuracy so mountain labels align with the direction you are facing.
• Camera feed — With your permission, the App uses your device camera to display augmented reality mountain labels over the live view. Camera images are processed on your device for AR display. We do not record, store, or upload photos or video from your camera.
• App settings and preferences — Choices you make in the App (such as search radius, field of view, and display options) are saved locally on your device.
• Cached mountain data — To improve performance and reduce network use, the App may store mountain names, coordinates, elevation, and related public geographic data on your device, along with the approximate location where that data was fetched.
• First-launch state — The App remembers whether you have completed the introductory onboarding screen.

Information sent over the internet

To load mountain information, the App sends a request to the OpenStreetMap Overpass API operated by third-party volunteers and infrastructure providers. Those requests include your approximate latitude and longitude (and a search radius) so the service can return nearby peak data. We do not send your name or account identifiers with these requests. The App identifies itself to the API with a generic user agent string (MountainID/1.0).

2. How we use information

We use the information described above to:

• Identify mountains near you and rank them by relevance;
• Display AR labels, distances, elevations, and directional information;
• Improve accuracy indicators and calibration guidance;
• Remember your preferences and cache data for faster performance;
• Maintain and improve the App.

We do not use your information for advertising, sell your personal information, or build advertising profiles about you.

3. What we do not collect

Based on the current version of Mountain ID, we do not:

• Operate user accounts or authentication within the App;
• Collect payment or billing information in the App;
• Use third-party analytics or advertising SDKs in the App;
• Upload or store your camera recordings on our servers;
• Knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

4. Legal bases (EEA, UK, and Switzerland)

If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, we process personal data on the following bases:

• Performance of a contract / service — To provide the App’s core mountain identification and AR features you request.
• Legitimate interests — To cache data locally, maintain security, and improve reliability, balanced against your rights.
• Consent — For access to location, camera, and motion-related sensors where iOS requires your permission. You may withdraw consent at any time in iOS Settings.

5. How we share information

We do not sell your personal information. We share information only in these limited circumstances:

• OpenStreetMap Overpass API — As described above, location coordinates are sent to retrieve public mountain data. OpenStreetMap’s own policies apply to their services. Learn more at openstreetmap.org.
• Service providers — If we use hosting, email, or support tools to operate our business, they may process information on our behalf under contractual obligations. The App itself does not currently transmit your data to Kippis Studios servers for core functionality.
• Legal requirements — We may disclose information if required by law, regulation, legal process, or governmental request, or to protect rights, safety, and security.
• Business transfers — If we are involved in a merger, acquisition, or asset sale, information may transfer as part of that transaction, subject to this Policy or a successor policy.

6. Data retention

Information stored on your device (preferences, cache, and onboarding state) remains until you delete the App or reset the App’s data through iOS. Cached mountain data may be refreshed when you move to a new area. We do not retain location or camera data on our own servers through normal App use.

7. Your choices and rights

You can control permissions and data as follows:

• Location and camera — Manage permissions in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services / Camera → Mountain ID.
• Delete local data — Remove the App from your device to delete locally stored preferences and cache.

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to certain processing of personal information, and to data portability or withdrawal of consent. To exercise these rights, contact us using the information below. We will respond as required by applicable law. You may also lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

California residents may have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), as amended by the CPRA, including the right to know, delete, and correct personal information, and to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. We do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.

8. Children’s privacy

Mountain ID is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, please contact us and we will take appropriate steps to delete it.

9. Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational measures designed to protect information. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure; we cannot guarantee absolute security.

10. International users

Mountain ID is operated from Canada. If you use the App from outside Canada, your information may be processed in Canada and in jurisdictions where our service providers or the OpenStreetMap infrastructure operate. Those locations may have different data protection laws than your country.

11. Third-party links and services

This Policy applies to Mountain ID. Our company website or other services may have separate policies. Third-party services (including Apple’s App Store and OpenStreetMap) have their own terms and privacy practices.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the revised version on this page and update the “Last updated” date. If changes are material, we may provide additional notice in the App or on our website. Continued use of the App after changes become effective means you accept the updated Policy.
